Brilliant highlights

Ver 0.31b

###

What is it?
-----------

A modified shader for Quake 4 (and D3/RoE as a separate mod) that gives high quality dynamic highlights and enhaces the 3D look of surfaces.

- Dynamic highlights. Using the original specular mapping from the game, my shader adjusts the highlight falloff separately per pixel.

- Highlight masking. Like in the built-in shader, the specular map is also used to mask the highlights from less shiny surfaces.

- Compatibility. Any hardware capable of the ARB 2.0 path can run this mod.

- Performance. BH mod favours math power over memory bandwidth as this is the current trend.

So how do I install?
--------------------

Extract the package to your quake 4 folder and "Brilliant highlights" mod will appear to the mods menu.

Bugs?
-----

With Doom 3 I saw occational oddly coloured objects but I have only tried the 3 first levels for Quake 4! Remember, this is beta...

What else?
----------

For the more tweaker in heart; you can adjust the minimum and maximum power and the minimum mask within the shader. The comments describe how.

Feedback?
---------

Sure; mail me at maha_x [AT] hotmail [DOT] com

Disclaimer?
-----------

See Quake 4 eula. Also, if you want to use my mod, ask. Not that I wanted to say no, just that I know. And credit me where required.

Sorry, I made a mistake with the package. Here's the revised install instructions:

Create "bhmod" folder into your Quake4 folder and extract the package there. The "brilliant highlights" mod will then appear to quake's mods menu.

This same mod is for Doom 3 too here:

There's better comparison pictures there, I'll be working on some comparison pictures for quake 4 as soon as I can.

Once again. Kick ass.
I congratulate you for running Q4 at 43 FPS. My nvidia 6800 Gt can't get 30 frames on high, 800 x 600 with pretty much everything turned off, and lower graphics setting barely improve. So sad...
Lucky that PC blew up.

Actually taking the screenshot dips the fps. I get a constant 60fps (@ 1280x720) most of the time, some places however dip it as low as 20fps. With a 6800GT you should definately do better. Mayby your CPU is the bottleneck? I run an Athlon 64 3400+ (the older 754 model).

BTW I posted better pics with comparisons (be prolly up in a day or two).

However it seems Raven used the specular highlights alot more and my mod doesn't improve highlights as much as in D3. I tried boosting the highlights but it just ends up in color burning. I prolly have a look at it (again) some time soon...

The fact that Raven compresses normal maps even at high quality really shows, the quality of the normal maps is simply not as good.

For the comparison screenshots, the Top one looks better, and the right one looks better, it looks a lot smoother in the lighting, I wonder why they couldn't do this in the first place! Oh well.
